Sludge Water: The Potential Pathway of Antibiotic Resistance and Pathogenic Bacteria in Hospitals to the Environment
Hospitals are major sources of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which accumulate in activated sludge. This study explores the distribution and migration risks of ARGs and human pathogenic bacteria in sludge water, comparing it to hospital wastewater. Results show a strong correlation between ARGs and hospital wastewater, with higher abundance in sludge water. ARGs are primarily transmitted through mobile genetic elements, making sludge water a critical route for their release.
